William E. Rutledge, SKD 2/C, CVE 21/106


He passed away at the age of 95.  He was born in Ft. Worth, Texas.  Bill was the youngest of six siblings.  Bill met his future wife, Josephine “Jo” Theresa Gendusa at a USO dance. They married in Dallas, Texas on July 4, 1944.  After graduating from Southern Methodist University, he worked for Texas Motor Freight as a tariff compiler for many years. He then worked for the Texas Employment commission as an interviewer until his retirement in 1984.  He had an amazing “green thumb” that was obvious whenever one saw his beautiful gardens, yard, and flower containers.  Bill is survived by his sons, Thomas Edward (Colleen) of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Stephen John (Nan) of Amanda Park, Washington, daughter, Martha Jo Drillette (Steve) of Little Rock, Arkansas; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, friends, and of course, all the caring staff at Channel Point. William Wetzel, GM 2/C, CVE 21/106


He passed away at the age of 91. He was a resident of Hazlet, New Jersey at the time of his passing. William was born on November 22, 1924 in Jersey City, NJ. After graduating High School William joined the Navy.  He served as post commander of the VFW 4303 for several terms and also was a life member of 37 years at Middletown Elks 2179. William is predeceased by Margaret (Brush) and John McTaggart of Jersey City and his son William J. Wetzel of Hazlet. He is the beloved husband of Mary T. Wetzel (Rothermel). William is the devoted father of his daughter Lynn and son in law Philipp Kramer, son Patrick and wife Patricia Wetzel, son Christopher Wetzel, and daughter Jacqueline and son in law Robert Eltringham. He is survived by his grandchildren Philipp and Marlena Kramer, William Kramer and Jennifer Kormos, Kristen and Sean Dunne, Kimberly Wetzel, Tommy and Amy Wetzel, Tyler and Mathew Eltringham, and Natalie Wetzel. John (Jack) Joseph Ward, Sr., EM-3, CVE 21


He passed away in Spring Hill, FL at the age of 92. He graduated from Lowell High school, in Lowell, MA, at the age of 16.  He enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 18.  After his Navy service, Jack worked for several railroad companies, including the Boston and Maine, New York Central, Penn Central and the Long Island Railroad.  He and his family lived in Lowell, MA; Syracuse and Peekskill, NY; Nashua, NH and Alexandria, VA.  In 1985, Jack & Elizabeth retired to Ft. Myers, FL and moved later to Spring Hill, where Elizabeth passed away in 2002.  Jack was a communicant of St. Theresa’s Parish. He is survived by his children:  John Jr., Michael, and Patricia Ward Vespo, ten loving grandchildren and friend and companion, Yvonne Wise. He was predeceased by wife, Elizabeth (married 56 years) and his eldest child, Ann Ward Fowler.  Sympathy cards may be sent to his son, Capt. John J. Ray was born July 16, 1926.  He is survived by wife Clariene Denette Olin Jones. Children: Steve Jones, Stan Jones and Jann Jones Gunn. Robert Axel Mayo Stark, SGT USMC, CVE106


Bob was born December 16, 1925 in Mountain Lake, Minnesota to Herb and Olive Stark. He graduated at the age of 16 from Madelia High School and joined the Marine Corps just after his 17th birthday. After his WWII service he graduated from Macalester College in 1949 with a BS in Mathematics. He met and married Jean Peterson and that was the beginning of a 61 year partnership lasting until Jean’s death from ALS in 2015.


Following graduation, Bob attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota and served both as Macalester’s wrestling coach and freshman football coach. He later earned a second degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Alaska. He worked as an electrical engineer for his own company as well for several large electronics companies.


Bob was preceded in death by his wife Jean (nee Peterson), son William Robert, parents Herbert and Olive Stark, brother Dewayne, and sisters Lavon (Huss) and Vernell (Jensen). He is survived by his son Peter (Heidi), daughter Jill, and son Andrew (Jeanine); grandchildren: Abbie, Clay and Will Stark.

Loftus A. (“Dutch”) Morrissey, Jr., CVE 106


He passed away at the age of 93.  He is survived by sons, Kevin Morrissey (Pam), James Morrissey (Denise); daughters Marcia Newman (Danny) and Gina Miller (Brad) 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  Dutch graduated from Duncan Preparatory School.  He was a Kappa Sigma at Vanderbilt University, where he studied Aeronautical Engineering.  He enlisted in the Navy when WWII began.  Due to his proficiency in math, the Navy sent him to Notre Dame and Georgia Tech for further training. At war’s end, he assumed leadership of the family business, Morrissey Meats and Provisions.  Dutch and his late wife, Marie, were among the founding members of St. Matthew Catholic Church where Dutch served as a Eucharistic minister and lector.  He was a consummate storyteller.  His many interests included golf, thoroughbred racing, fishing at Clearwater Beach, keeping up with Navy buddies and supporting Vanderbilt athletics where he and his brother, Joe, were recipients of the Commodore Club Award.  But his favorite activity by far was enjoying his family, especially at his renowned cookouts.  Sympathy cards may be sent to his son, Kevin Morrissey:  360 Sandcastle Road, Franklin, TN  37069-7184.

Fred DeBerardinis, EM 3/C, USS Paine


He passed away at the age of 91. Fred was a member of the second graduating class of Edward Bok Vocational High School in 1942. He worked for General Electric at the GE Philadelphia Service Shop for 40 years. After marrying his wife of 66 years, Antoinette Caccavo DeBerardinis, he raised his family in South Philadelphia. Fred was a supportive father and he loved his 4 grandchildren. For years, he served as president of Local 120 IUE, AFL-CIO. And he was a Democratic committeeman in the 1st Division, 26th Ward. He was also a member of VFW Post 3614, American Legion Post 0425.  In addition to his wife, Antoinette, daughter Gail and grandson Edward, Fred is survived by a son, Robert, and three other grandchildren.  Sympathy cards may be sent to Mrs. Antoinette DeBerardinis, 1637 Croatan Place, Philadelphia, PA  19145-5403.

Clarence (Bob) Mackey, Ship’s Cook, USS Ahrens


He was a longtime Calumet City and Roseland, IL resident, recently of St. John, IN.  He was a retired Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy, commissioned to the USS Coral Sea, October 1, 1947.  He served during World War II and the Korean War with 43 years of combined active and reserve service.  Bob was a lifetime member of Roseland Post 49 American Legion.  He was a retired Machinist with 5 years of service with the C&EI Union Pacific Railroad.  Bob is survived of daughter, Irene Massacavollo.  Also survived by four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and great-great grandfather to Ronnie.  His wife and son predeceased Bob.  Sympathy cards may be sent to his daughter, Mrs. Irene Massacavollo, 11319 Ventura Trail, St. John, IN  46373-9462.

Kenneth E. Benson, FC, CVE 106


He passed away at his residence. He was born on January 1, 1923 in Ripley, West Virginia.  Prior to his retirement, Kenneth was a hairdresser for 35 years. He also enjoyed woodworking and upholstering. This loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend will be missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ethel Benson; and siblings, Raymond Benson, Carl Benson and Viola McMahan. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Germaine Benson; children, Nadine Lambeth and husband, James Grady Dodd II, Douglas Benson and wife, Alice, and Renee Benson Maule and husband, Warren; siblings, Ralph, Lawrence and Vernon Benson and Helen Thomas; grandchildren, Kari Watts and husband, Barrett, Kenneth Taylor Benson and wife, Phoebe, Mary Maule, and Brian Maule; along with extended family and friends. Cecil Clarke, UK Honorary BI Member and former POW


He passed away on April 26th at the age of 94. He attended Christ Church in Bedford (England), having completed an Alpha course in his 80s. Cecil was honored to be a part of our 2007 BI Reunion and especially enjoyed our day trip to Block Island. Howard Martin Graham, Y, CVE 106 WWII


He passed away on April 11, 2015 at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife, Doris, of 68 years, granddaughters Natalie McRanie (Duane) and, Angela Adams (Doug), great- grandchildren; Mia, Alexis, Jaxon, and Paxton; and daughter-in-law, Jeanette Forney. A Navy veteran of WWII, Howard served in the South Pacific. He retired from Mid-America Dairyman. He was a member of Strafford United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge 608. William Douglas “Bud” Nanney, S 1/C, Baker, CVE 21/106


He passed away on April 4 at age 90, in Henry, Tennessee,. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for over 70 years. He had been chairman of the Deacons since 1966 and was the former Choir Director and was named Music Director Emeritus. Bud retired after many years at Holley Carburetor Plant. He was also a long-time farmer and he enjoyed woodworking. He was a WWII Navy Veteran, and a member of the McKenzie Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. He was married on December 18, 1948 to Orville Sanders Nanney of Henry, TN and she survives. They were married for 67 years. He is also survived by his one daughter, Carol Parrish (Larry) of Henry, TN; one son,Ronnie Nanney and special friend Ellen Hartsfield of Camden, TN, six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Frank C. Pileggi, CSSN [Commissary Seaman], CVE 106 Korea Era


He passed away on February 17, 2016, at the age of 86 in Ocean City, NJ .  


He is survived by his children, Nancy and Jimmie of Ocean City, NJ and one sister Barbara Pileggi of Portland, ME. Frank was preceded in death by his wife Bettie, a son Frankie and a sister, Mickey. Frank served in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Block Island, CVE106. He received the Korean Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal and the United Nations Medal. Frank worked for GG’s Diamond Tailor Shop for many years.

Wiley C. "Bill" Hersman, S 2/C, CVE 106


He passed away February 1, 2016 at the age of 88, following a long illness. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II. He became a State Trooper and later became a US Marshall and served as a Guard for Senator Robert C. Byrd. Mr. Hersman also served on the Wyoming Interstate Commerce Commission. He is survived by son, Christopher Hersman; a daughter Cheryl Hersman; a sister, Nancy Blake and two grandchildren.
