110 Years Ago – 1914
Many folks were in Remsen on the 4th of July to witness the baseball game between Marcus and Remsen.

105 Years Ago -1919
Mr. & Mrs. Theodore Peitz are the parents of a son born Saturday, June 28.
Little Mildred Prettyman of Manson came last week for a visit with her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Fred Quirin. Mildred is six years old and this was her first journey on the train alone.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Carl Miller, a son on Friday, June 30.
Mr. & Mrs. Theodore Treinen are occupying the Evans property which has been vacated by Mr. & Mrs. Moore.
Theodore Peitz;s automobile caught fire last Saturday caused by the carburetor becoming loose which threw gas. Mr. Peitz managed to get the blaze out with pails of water.

100 Years Ago – 1924
A special meeting of Lady Foresters is being held at Columbia Hall tonight. Mrs Max Radcliffe and Mrs. Dan Collins have charge of the entertainment.
Thirty farm bureau ladies met with the chairman Mrs. Tom Garvin on Tuesday. Following a social afternoon a delightful lunch was served by the hostess, Mrs. Anton Anderson.
Chris Scott who has been teaching in the Philippine Islands for the past three years is on his way to Marcus to visit his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Scott.
One hundred neighbors and friends met at the home of Will Schmillen on the Fourth of July and enjoyed a picnic. The afternoon was spent in running races and Indoor ball.
At a special election last Monday voters in Simpson Bethel Consolidated school district voted to erect four one room school buildings to replace the old structure which has stood for many a day.

95 Years Ago -1929
One hundred and fifty delegates representing the lodges in Cherokee County were in attendance at the 26th annual convention of the Little Sioux Rebekahs at Cleghorn Thursday, June 27.
Members of the firm of the JP Beck company and clerks and families are looking forward to their annual picnic next Tuesday, July 9 when they will take the day off, lock up their stores in Marcus, Remsen and Granville and enjoy the day at the Tourist Park in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Kuehn and daughter Lorraine and Myrtle Walter and Esther Burnmeister of Milwaukee, Wisconsin are guests this week in the Carl Kuehn home.
Rev. and Mrs. E.J. Plummer, Mrs. Rebecca Miller and Mrs. Alice French called at the John Holmes home on Tuesday evening.

85 Years Ago -1939
Mr. & Mrs. L.J. McGivern left Thursday morning for New York City to attend the fair. They will also visit in Washington DC and other points in the east.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Treptow are the proud parents of a daughter born to them Saturday evening July 1 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars
A deal ws completed last week by which N.E. Devin of Sioux City bought and took possession of the Cliff Ritts Tavern July 1.
Mr. & Mrs. WW Bass and Mr. & Mrs. Harry Baumgardner left for an extended western trip. Their principle stop will be at the San Francisco fair and they will visit other points of interest including the Yellowstone Park and the Black Hills.
Miss Charlotte Tommey of Washington DC accompanied Mr. & Mrs. Michael O’Brien of Sioux City to Marcus Tuesday where she will visit for a few days.
By a score of 5-3 the Marcus Juniors lost the ball game Tuesday with a Cherokee team composed of players from WAshta, Quimby, Larrabee, Schisselville and Cherokee.

80 Years Ago – 1944
Howard Johnson, formerly associated with his father, G.W. Johnson has taken complete charge of the Radio Electric Shop at its new location north of George’s Pharmacy.
Lr. Virgil Wirt was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight in the European theater of war.
The Getheseman church of Oyens and the Nazareth Church of Marcus held a joint picnic Tuesday, July 4 on the church grounds at Oyens.
Mrs. Floyd Gray has received word that her husband, Lt. Gray is now stationed somewhere in France.
Elizabeth Benson has accepted a position as telephone operator in the LeMars office.
Sgt. and Mrs. Leo French are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday, June 27.
Straub’s Store advertised salt, iodized pkg 6 cents, corn starch pkg 7 cents, Rice krispies, 2-25 cents, and summer.
John Holmes and Robert Roberts attended an Odd Fellows meeting at Cherokee Thursday morning.

75 Years Ago -1949
Three young ladies from the Marcus community have been entered in the “Miss Cherokee County” contest being staged as a part of the pageant sponsored by the Pilot Plowing Matched Association. They are Donna Simons, Sherillean Brownmiller, and Joan Berger.
Beryl Collins, 41 of Los Angeles, California, died at Los Angeles hospital Friday morning at 2:00 am.
Rita Garvin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Mark Garvin and Mary Broblek daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Broblek entered the Ellis School of Cosmetology in Sioux City Tuesday.
The Marcus Junior Legion baseball team won a lopsided game at Granville Sunday afternoon. With the score 17 to 2 the game was called at the end of the fourth inning.
Mrs. Frank Clark and Mrs. Ellen Ames were co-hostesses at an outdoor meeting of the Marcus Garden Club Tuesday afternoon July 5 at the home of the former.

70 Years Ago -1954
Mr. & Mrs. Jake Dixson Jr. are parents of a son born Monday, June 28 in the Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars.
The Rev. John Christensen has accepted the position of custodian of the new Marcus grade school for the coming year.
A landmark widely known in this part of the country suddenly disappeared about 7:30 Monday morning. What must have been a small tornado suddenly swooped down on the Alfred Keffeler farm four miles west of town and tore the roof on the huge round barn.
Preparations are being completed for the observance of the 75th anniversary of Trinity Lutheran church on Sunday, July 25.
Mr. & Mrs. Max Hodges are parents of a boy born July 11.
Pvt. John S Meylor, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ed Meylor, is now enrolled in the anti-craft and guided missiles branch at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Smith are the proud parents of a girl born July 3 in the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.

65 Years Ago -1959
Rev. Kenneth Bressler was reappointed as pastor of Grace Methodist Church at the North Iowa Methodist Conference at Mason City last week.
Jean Garlow, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Garlow, was on of the 90 students on the honor roll list released this week by Wayne State Teachers College at Wayne, NE.
The regular meeting of the Liberty Bells 4H Club was held at the home of Sharon Skaggs on June 15. Roll call was answered by eleven members and two leaders.
Jon Gates was among the June graduating class of the two year Medical School at the University of South Dakota.
Marcus is one of 150 Iowa towns to be “air-marked” this summer by the Iowa Aeronautic Commission. The word “Mar” has been painted on the roof of the DeVries Motor Company.
Mr, & Mrs, Nile Eberly have moved into their new home on East Cedar Street, just east of the Johann Miller home.
The ball diamond area of the Marcus Playground is undergoing a resurfacing job, with the Bill Radcliffe crew doing the work.
Regina McLaughlin attended a one day workshop presented by Briar Cliff College in Sioux City in cooperation with the Schmoeller and Mueller Piano Company.
Mrs. Hallie Glines was honored by er fellow telphone operators at a steak supper in Storm Lake.

60 Years Ago -1964
Mr. & Mrs. Mark Roethler are the parents of their first child, a daughter born Wednesday June, 24 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Wilbur Hohbach of Marcus has been presented a sow and pig management award by the Moorman Manufacture Company. The award is being made to hog raisers whose sows wean larger than average litters.
Margaret Brady and Ann Simonsen accompanied by Mrs, Norman Peterson of Sioux City left from the Omaha airport by jet for Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Marcus Fire Department was called when the Oliver tractor belonging to Earl Carney caught fire.
Mrs. Harvey White attended the hot lunch certified course held at Ames.

55 Years Ago -1969
On Sunday, June 29 Peace Lutheran Church of Marcus marked its 25th anniversary as a congregation and the 11th anniversary of its present worship and educational facilities.
Mrs. Walter Harvey, 81 and longtime Plymouth county resident, died Wednesday, June 18 at Floyd Valley Hospital after an illness of several months.
Mr. & Mrs. Keith Rimmer of Marcus are the parents of a girl born Wednesday, June 25.
Thomas Anderson, son of Mrs. Carl Anderson of Marcus, is a graduate of the Defense International US Army Logistics Management Center, Fort Lee, Virginia.
Thirty to forty thousand people are expected to attend the LeMars Centennial celebration on three big days July 3, 4 and 5 according to John W. Allen, LeMars Centennial Publicity chairman.

50 Years Ago -1974
Mrs. John Ostmann, 74, and former Remsen resident, resident, died July 1 in Lisbon.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Schlenger were guests of honor on their 54th wedding anniversary at a Sunday picnic held in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Schlenger.
Bill Radcliff and a crew begin construction on the tennis court north of the quonset building at the fairgrounds. The court will be regulation size, however not just tennis players are watching the operation with anticipation, but the Grand Spinners will benefit.
John, Heline, 56, passed away suddenly Monday, July 1, 1974 in his farm home in Tilden Township due to a heart condition.

45 Years Ago – 1979
Mr. & Mrs. Vincent Garvin of Marcus will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, July 15 with an open house.
Mr. & Mrs. George Engebretson are proud parents of a boy born June 14.
Robert Tomson, 61, owner and operator of Thomson Garage and Implement died Tuesday, June 26, 1979 at University Hospitals in Iowa city after six week illness.
Reserve Champion steer at Remsen Kid’s Day June 13, 1979 was shown by Dan Berglund of Marcus, a member of the Grand Meadow Future Feeders 4H Club.
Lovell Roberson Sr., 78 of Marcus died Tuesday June 26 in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee after a long illness.
