Netflix, Crunchyroll Impacted by Data Leak, With Full Episodes of Anime Titles Released (thewrap.com) 13

Postedby msmash from the major-headaches dept.

An anonymous reader writes: Netflix and Crunchyroll titles leaked on Thursday, with full episodes of shows released on social media including the anticipated "Heartstopper" Season 3 and anime fare like "Arcane" and the Season 3 premiere of "Re:Zero."

The leak was first reported internationally, as fans spotted clips of unfinished footage on social media, "One of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online," a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement exclusively to TheWrap Thursday night. "Our team is aggressively taking action to have it taken down."

Apparently it was a dubbing studio that got hacked.
Kind of poses an interesting question. You can take all the security measures you want, but if none of your partners take security seriously, you're screwed.

It means they'll have to either increase prices or reduce the value of services provided so that they can enhance their security. I'm sure there will be a flood of posts here using varying degrees of sophistry and rationalization to justify this theft of property. Too many technically competent (and presumably highly intelligent) people are perfectly willing to take what they want. Sorry to admit, I'm one of 'em.

If anybody here would like to know why Netflix et. al. are bent on increasing both security and prices, I recommend the use of an ancient scrying device known as a mirror.

I doubt a leak like this will hurt legitimate viewing, so long as it is suppressed enough to not be the norm. If they lay down and stopped policing it at all, sure that would remove the incentive to pay.

/. moderation should not be used to push personal agendas. Whoever downmodded you would do well to learn that.

This effects nothing. So a few title lists got released, so what? So a few episodes of some manga-to-anime got sprung early. So what? This isn't anything big. (Had never heard of Heartstopper, and never cared that Re:Zero existed.) This doesn't effect anyone and any price rises are a cash-grab when what they really need to do is tighten up some security.

Lawsuits. Someone screwed up. Contracts were probably violated. And someone is going to seek damages. Those damages are going to be a complete fantasy but that is how the legal system works around copyright and corporate contract law.
